NDLEA Arrests 85-Year-Old Grandma with 179kg of Cannabis in Edo

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested an 85-year-old grandmother, Grace Ehimeka, popularly known as Mama Grace, with 179kg of cannabis in Edo.

The Edo NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this on Monday, saying the suspect was arrested alongside five others during coordinated raids in Edo and Delta states.

Ofoyeju said operatives recovered 407.39kg of cannabis, 546 grams of loud, 114 grams of tramadol, four grams of diazepam and three grams of swinol during the operations.

He said Ehimeka was arrested at her home in Warake community, Owan East Local Government Area, on Oct. 16.

According to him, the grandmother admitted selling cannabis for more than two years to survive, despite warnings from family members.

“I am a widow and started selling cannabis over two years ago just to survive,” she reportedly said, pleading for another chance.

The other suspects are Ali Garba, 57; Habib Braimoh, 45; Musa Mubid, 35; Ayo Aigberadion, 53; and Hope Okoro, 35.

The suspects were arrested in Warake, Ivbiaro, Ewe/Irue and Auchi, with various quantities of cannabis and other illicit substances recovered.

Ofoyeju warned that old age would not shield anyone from prosecution, urging residents to provide credible information to help combat drug trafficking and abuse.
