Two Edo Widows Beg Okpebholo to Ensure Prosecution of Husband’s Suspected Killers
*reject N500,000 offer, demand recovery of husband’s remains
Two young widows in Edo have appealed to Gov. Monday Okpebholo to intervene and ensure the prosecution of suspects allegedly involved in the disappearance and killing of their husband, Azuka Sunday, in 2024.
The widows, Joy Friday, 28, and Favour Azuka, 34, said their husband and two of his friends had yet to be found since they reportedly went to Obagie community in Oredo Local Government Area for a job.
They made the appeal when they led a peaceful protest to the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, demanding a thorough investigation and justice for their husband.
The women alleged that their husband was killed after he was invited to work in the community but expressed frustration that his remains had not been recovered.
Joy said the incident had devastated their family, adding that their children had stopped attending school because of the hardship they faced following their husband’s disappearance.
She also alleged that some individuals had offered them money to abandon their demand for justice, but they rejected the offer.
“Our husband, Azuka Sunday, went to Obagie community to work in 2024. They said he was killed, but we are still looking for his body.
“We heard that somebody in government is trying to secure the release of the suspect fingered in the killing of our husband,” she said.
Favour also alleged that the suspect had sent N500,000 to support the children, but the family rejected the money.
She said their demand was not financial compensation but the recovery of their husband’s remains and the prosecution of those responsible for his alleged killing.
The widows urged the governor to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet and that anyone found culpable was made to face the law.
They appealed to relevant authorities to intensify efforts to locate the missing bodies and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
